Halloween Foods Your Pet Shouldn't Eat

With Halloween quickly approaching, many pet parents may think to treat their pets with yummy snacks. However, many popular Halloween snacks are incredibly dangerous for pets, so it’s important to be watchful of what your pet eats. We’ve put together a list of what treats and foods to avoid this Halloween in order to keep your pet healthy.

Many pet parents know this, but if you don’t, chocolate is incredibly toxic for dogs and cats. Dark and baking chocolate are the most dangerous and can be fatal to your pet. No chocolate, in any amount, should be given to your pet.

Next, an ingredient all pet parents should shy away from is xylitol. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candy, and baked goods. This can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar, liver failure, or death.

You must also stray away from raisins or grapes. You can find these in trail mixes. If ingested by your dog, they may cause sudden liver failure.

Lots of typical Halloween foods, like caramel apples or candy corn, can cause severe upset stomach or pancreatitis in your pets. So, don’t feed these to them.

An important thing to keep in mind this Halloween is to safely dispose of your candy wrappers. Lots of sneaky, curious pets may ingest leftover foils or plastic wrappers. Once ingested, these can cause dangerous intestinal blockages.

If you unfortunately find yourself in the position where you believe your pet has ingested any one of these, it’s best to consult your veterinarian immediately.

We hope you and your pets have a safe, happy Halloween season! And remember: if you are ever wondering, “can my dog/cat eat this?”, simply look it up online! This simple task can save yourself and your pet from excess worrying or illnesses.
